History

The Cock-A-Tzu is an average sized dog which was created by crossing the Shih Tzu and the American Cocker Spaniel. Since they are designer breeds, not much history is known about them.

Temperament and Personality

The dog is a sweet and sensitive that gets along with all the members of the family including children as well as other pets. They look for the attention of everyone and expect more than a hug. It also tends to be inactive and lazy at times and may develop a hyper attitude. Not suitable as a guard dog, they pursue to be conscious regarding being loyal and will protect its premises from trespassers.

Care

Exercise

Being a relatively active dog, it requires a moderate amount of activity, for about half an hour or so. Take them for walks or jogging to keep them fit both mentally and physically. Visit dog parks and let them interact with other dogs. If it is at home, provide them with a lot of safe toys or play indoor games to keep them away from boredom.

Grooming

The dog requires brushing every alternate day to do away with rough and dead hair. Bathe them when necessary with a dog shampoo, but too much bathing can deplete natural oils from the skin. Other things include checking and wiping its ears weekly, cleaning its teeth twice or thrice a week and clipping off their nails when it grows too long.

Health Problems

Since its parents tend to have ear issues because the hair grows in or around or deep ear canal, so it might also develop an ear infection. Other dog breed problems it may be prone to are eye problems, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, collapsed trachea, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, skin problems and allergies.

Training

The breed is smart and intelligent which makes preparation easy and quick. Their obedient and easy to please nature can help them to socialize better. Crate training is very essential and it should be implemented during the puppyhood.

Feeding

A medium sized dog requires 1½ to 2 cups of high-quality dry dog food, but its diet should also contain chicken, fish, salmon and red meat to meet its energy level.
