History

The Majorca shepherd is a pure Spanish breed used mainly as a shepherd dog. Their exact origin and history are still unknown. They have a clear head with a medium-sized muzzle. It has a black nose with round and small eyes, broad chest, muscular hind legs, short feet and an undocked tail. Some experts often compare this breed with the Basque shepherd dog and the Spanish Mastiff.

Interesting Facts

  1. Majorca shepherd breed has an extreme endurance against the Mediterranean hot climate, so they are exported to Brazil as guard dogs.

Temperament & Personality

Majorcas are devoted pets and will go to any extent to protect their family. These dogs are neither too shy nor too aggressive though some may have a dominant nature. They often bark at strangers and can become aggressive.

The Majorca shows its guarding instincts when it leads a pack of sheep where its leadership qualities emerge naturally. This breed is more suitable for experienced dog owners with a big yard or active singles.

Exercise

Because of their guarding instincts and an active lifestyle, the Majorcas need daily activities. A regular long walk or a free run in the yard area  (unleashed) is sufficient. If deprived of regular exercise, the dog will develop a destructive instinct. Frequent play sessions with other dogs will evoke their playful side.

Grooming

The Majorcas have a thick coat which is self-cleaning and does not need occasional bathing. They do need brushing once a week to distribute natural oil to keep its coat shiny.

Health Problems

Large breed dogs such as Majorca shepherd suffer from health issues which arise because of their dominant size. This breed is prone to Gastric torsion, Hip dysplasia, and Patellar Luxation.

Training

The Majorcas are confident and independent because of their origin as shepherd dogs. The trainer should be strict and steady in training them as they become stubborn at times. Early socialization and obedience training is crucial for as in the future they may get aggressive upon seeing a stranger. Punishment during a training session will only make the dog more destructive and threat to everyone.

Feeding

Because of their colossal size, the Majorcas need a high-quality diet food combined with an active breed formula.
