History

The Shiffon is the cross between the Shih Tzu and the Brussels Griffon breed. They are small and compact with a round face, two black eyes, a dark-colored snout, and a pair of floppy ears which are densely covered in hair. These dogs have a well-defined body, and the coat is covered with smooth and silky hair.

Temperament & Personality

These rambunctious and curious dogs are known to sniff around the house in search of small insects. Being playful and fun-loving, these dogs make a lovely family pet. These little wonders love human company and can frequently be seen moving around the owner. They like to interact with small children and other pets in the house.

Some Shiffons can suffer from the small dog syndrome, and can even take up a fight with big dogs. The pet can even get possessive of its owner and can act aggressively at times. Prolonged separation from the owner may result in anxiety and excessive barking.

Exercise

Because of their small and compact size, these dogs need a minimum amount of activity on a daily basis. It will love the interaction with other dogs in the dog park being off leash. If the owner has a big and open yard, the owner should allow the dog to play in the yard area. If deprived of regular and proper exercise, these dogs can develop a destructive behavior. To compensate this, the owner can give them some soft toys with which it can have some play session indoors.

Grooming

The Shiffon needs a moderate amount of grooming compared to other small breeds. As they shed moderately, the owner should brush the dog once in a week to remove dead hair and prevent the dog from matting. The owner can also groom the dog in a groomer’s parlor. Bathing frequently will hamper the natural distribution of oils in the body but brushing the teeth once in a week will prevent tooth decay.

Health Problems

The Shiffon dog can suffer from health issues like Patellar Luxation, Cataracts, Hip dysplasia, Allergies, Reverse sneezing, Tooth decay, and Bladder stones. Occasional tests such as X-ray, Blood analysis, Full body examination, Abdominal Ultrasound can prevent the dog from getting various health issues.

Training

The Shiffons can be a stubborn and tough subject for the trainer. But these dogs have an eager to please personality which makes them respond quite well to commands and instructions. The trainer should never be rude as this can make the dog more stubborn and disobedient. Praising is one of the biggest weapons the trainer can use in accelerating the training process combined with food rewards. To accomplish housebreaking, obedience, and crate training, the trainer should be more flexible in training the dog.

Feeding

A diet meant for the small breed dogs, rich in nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, and minerals will maintain the dog’s overall health.
