History

Siberian Retriever developed from a cross between Labrador Retrievers and Siberian Husky is a designer dog which is sometimes confused with Labrador Husky. However, few dogs with taller stature look like a Husky while others have an appearance of Labrador Retriever.

Interesting Facts

  • Siberian Retriever like to stay indoors in the rainy season and do not like wet weather.
  • They are not only good watchdogs, but they are best for search, rescue, tracking, retrieving, narcotics detection and police work.
  • This breed has a variety of eye colors.

Temperament & Personality

Siberian Retriever is popular for its cheerful, loving and friendly nature making them an ideal family pet. They develop a unique bond with their owner and have an intense desire for human attention. It suffers from anxiety and develops odd behaviors if left alone for a long period of time. They are good watchdogs and inform their owners by barking if they see any suspicious activity inside their territory. The dog inherits likeness for water sports from its Labrador Retriever parent. It also has a prey drive and runs after moving objects, but training at an early age can curb it.

Exercise

To avoid boredom, this breed requires a heavy exercising schedule, not only to utilize their energy but to avoid getting obese. As they tend to overeat and lay around, a house with a yard will suit them best. Two long walks one in the morning and other in the evening will be adequate. They like to swim and take part in games like carting, agility, and Frisbee. It not only keeps the dog busy but provides mental stimulation. The dog will suit people with the active lifestyle, as they will join their owners in jogging, running and walking. A fenced yard or park, where they can play can run on their own is the best activity for them. These dogs are excellent exercise mates; they accompany their owners on a cycling adventure.

Grooming

Siberian retriever requires moderate grooming as they have a double coat with silky hair which sometimes lengths short to medium. They shed moderately but sometimes experience a huge seasonal shedding. Brushing frequently with a pin brush eliminates all the dead hairs and keeps the coat dirt free and healthy. Bathe them with a mild shampoo only when they are incredibly filthy or smelly. Frequent bathing can lead to skin irritations and dry their skin. The owner can take professional help for efficient cleaning and trim. Its droopy ears will retain moisture and wax, which will require cleaning every week to prevent painful ear infection. Teeth brushing every 2-3 days will avert tartar collection and tooth decay. Nails will need clipping when they overgrow.

Health Problems

It is a healthy breed but can inherit few problems from its parents:

Major Problems:

  • Eye Problems
  • Canine Hip Dysplasia
  • Skin Diseases

Minor Problems

  • Arthritis
  • Degenerative Myelopathy

Occasional Tests:

  • Neurological Examination
  • Blood Count Complete
  • Eye examination
  • Physical Examination
  • Urinalysis

However, regular veterinarian checkups and occasional tests will keep it healthy.

Training

They are easy to train and master the skills very efficiently. Though, a consistent and firm trainer is crucial as they become intolerant at times. Positive training methods like gifts and rewards will make it learn quickly. By taking them to public places like bus stops, parks and dog parks will allow the dog to meet new people and develop a friendly behavior. House training is mandatory to teach the dog etiquettes and manners as a family pet.

Feeding

It requires a nutritious diet with sufficient amount of vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. It also needs 2 ½ - 3 cups of commercial dry dog food every day. Dividing meals into two halves will keep digestion in order. Supervision is crucial as they incline to eat more and overeating will lead to numerous diseases.
